Elgin Park Drive just got a massive haircut.
We received a bunch of messages after people saw trees that were felled on the south side of Elgin Park Drive, just west of Wooden Sticks Golf Course. Although the actual permits have not yet been applied for, Brookfield Residential plans on developing the land and constructing 39 condo townhouse bungalows.
“I think because of your location, this suits a seniors' housing…..What we need here is bungalows so residents can move out of their homes if it’s too large or has stairs, and be able to purchase something centrally located,” said former Mayor Gerri Lynn O’Connor of the proposed development back in 2017. The property on Elgin Park Drive is close to senior's residence of Shobrook Gardens, and pharmacies, a grocery store, walking trails, and the hospital.
As sad as it is to see the trees come down, they were specifically cleared prior to May 1 to ensure it was outside of the breeding bird season (May 1st to July 31st). Developers will, at some point, provide a Buffer & Enhancement Planting Plan and propose to plant a mix of native deciduous and coniferous trees, native low and tall deciduous shrubs, and a native seed mix for meadow habitats.
As an avid hiker through our Countryside Preserve, I was happy to see that the trail system close to Elgin Park Drive was left intact. Early just this morning, I caught a glimpse of a deer crossing my path on the trail. May the wildlife continue to thrive here.
